These ‘Jingles’ are used to teach children the correct formation and orientation of letters. This ensures that letters are started and ended in the correct place. We teach ‘the Jingles’ early to avoid bad habits which are difficult to reverse (for example writing the letter b like a number 6). When children are ready to begin joining their letters, if they are writing them correctly with the correct entry and exit points, the transition to joined handwriting is much easier. ‘The Jingles’ relate to the ‘Jolly Phonic’ actions and songs, providing the children with a pre-cursor and a friendly image to establish a familiar link. The ‘Jolly Phonics’ songs should be taught first – this is to enable children to consolidate the correct oral articulation and pronunciation.
