Home learning Week 5

Comparing Welsh  National Parks

Hello again – happy Monday!! Hope you’ve had another good week and are ready to begin bringing together our work on the Welsh National Parks!

Please can you save your work in J2office    in Just2easy.

Review the data you’ve collected for each park to answer the following:

  1. How much larger is the population of Brecon Beacons than Snowdon?
  2. Which park has the largest reservoir?
  3. Which park has the smallest coniferous woodland?
  4. Where will you find most Welsh speakers?
  5. All three parks have agriculture as an historical industry.

Use the internet to find out more about one of the other industries mentioned for each National Park eg gunpowder works – Brecon; fishing  – Pembrokeshire.

National Parks are great tourist attractions. Create a travel brochure/ leaflet to promote one of these National Parks. Things to include:

  • Brief summary of the area
  • Location (including a map)
  • Main towns
  • Historic sites and landmarks
  • Recreation and outdoor activities available – parks, sports
  • Transportation
  • Pictures/graphics
  • Additional information of interest – famous people etc.

Remember brochures need to be eye-catching and informative enough to encourage people to visit. Here’s a useful site for ideas:

Science (Forces)

Investigating up thrust in water

Fill a bowl of water and use an object such as an inflated balloon/ rubber ball/ rubber duck

  • Push object into a bowl of water. What do you feel?
  • What is the water doing to the object?
  • What happens when you let go of the object?

When something is pushed or pulled down into water, the water pushes back. This push is called ‘up thrust’.

If the weight of the object and the up thrust are balanced, the object will float.

If the weight of the object is heavier than the up thrust of the water, the object sinks.

Maths

This week we are going to link coordinates with our mapping skills to locate places using 4 or 6 figure grid references. Check out these sites to remind you how to read eastings and westings:

HWB – https://hwb.gov.wales/

www.activelearnprimary.co.uk

These are the two online primary websites which are used by Godre’rgraig class teachers and children. These are the most effective for your child’s learning and will be linked to their age and ability. Your children will be familiar with these and the majority will be able to use independently after the initial set-up.

Children will need passwords and username details which have been sent out via schoop.
