Year 2 / Year 3

Friday 11th April 2025

What a fantastic week.  In language the children have been finishing off their stories and in maths the children have been looking at time.  The main event of the week was our Carnival.   The children planned and created the most amazing Carnival day and I am so proud of them.  Over the last few weeks they have made carnival masks, hats and dancing ribbon wands independently in the challenge areas and they used these during their carnival parade around the school.  They collaborated together to design and make carnival games and couldn’t wait to show the rest of the pupils in the school how to play them.   They learnt a carnival dance and used musical instruments to create their own music for the carnival.  They decided that a carnival need to have a competition and they decided to have a ‘Guess the baby competition’ and this was completed by all members of the class. The carnival entertainment was a Talent show where all the children were keen to show off their talents to the rest of their peers and I have to say all  the children are all very talented.

Friday 4th April 2025

Another lovely week in year 2 and 3. In maths the children have started looking at time and solved a mathematical problem where they had to see how many symmetrical coats they could make  for the Carnival King using the colours green, red, yellow and blue.  They had to recognise a line of symmetry and work systematically and explain their methods and reasoning.

In language the children have completed the beginning and middle of their stories and we are hoping to finish them next week.  They have worked so hard and they have all illustrated their stories beautifully.

In topic  the children completed a timetable for carnival day and thought of a competition for the carnival – Guess the baby competition.  They have all collaborate extremely well together making their carnival games and they can’t wait to play them with the rest of the class next week.  They have made carnival art where they chose pictures linked to carnivals to draw and these will then all be put together to make a collage of their carnival art.

Friday 28th March 2025

Another lovely week in year 2 and 3.  In maths the childrensolved a mathematical problem where they had to work out if the  people marching in the carnival parade were  marching on the left side or right side when they took their 30th step?  To solve the problem they had to be able to describe and continue repeating patterns and recognise odd and even numbers.  In language the children started writing the beginning of their stories.  They also worked hard thinking of describing words and wow words to improve their sentences.

In topic area the children looked on the internet to find the cheapest supermarkets and shops to buy candy floss and popcorn for our carnival day.  They found out that the Morrisons sell the cheapest candy floss per 100g and Tesco sell the cheapest popcorn per 100g.   In challenge area the children began to create their own Carnival games, made Carnival ribbon wands and used their addition and subtraction skills in the mathematics area whilst playing ‘Carnival Ring Toss’

Friday 21st March 2025

We have had a busy week again in Year 2 and 3.  In maths the children represent data using  tally charts to find out the children’s favourite fruit and then created bar charts using their results.  In language all children finished their story plans and some started to write their stories.  In topic work the children found out about different carnivals around the world and researched which carnival is the biggest in the world.  They then wrote a list of all the things that are needed for a carnival in order to plan and organise their own carnival at the end of the term.

Friday 14th March 2025

This week in year 2 and 3 the children have worked really well. In maths the children solved a maths problem where they had to describe and continue patterns in a sequence of numbers. They had to use their problem solving skills to work out how many tables would be needed for 22 guests to all sit together. The only information they were given was that  4 people can fit around one table  and 6 people fit around 2 tables.

In language they have been writing their own story maps and talking about their own story. In topic we talked and wrote  about “What we can celebrate about Wales” and why we are proud to live in Wales.

Friday 7th March 2025

This week the children have had fun completing challenges linked to Wales.  We talked about who St David was, why we celebrate St Davids day and how we celebrate it in Wales.  The children collaborated together in groups and wrote everything they had learnt about St David in a spider diagram.  They then fed back to the class in their groups discussing what they had learnt and discovered.  In maths the children were rounding numbers to the nearest 10 and the nearest 100.  In language we wrote our story maps and the children have talked about how they could change the story ‘The magic Brush’ to make their own story.

Friday 21st February 2025

This week year 2 and 3 we have had a lovey week again. In language we have been learning the story ‘The magic brush’ and talked about the 5 parts of a story mountain and their importance in story writing.
In maths we looked at multiplication and how it’s links to division and repeated addition.

In topic we looked and talked about different celebrations and festivals in the world and talked about what a celebration is and why we celebrate different things. Have a lovely half term.

Friday 7th February

This week year 2 and 3 we have had a lovey week again. In language we read the story ‘The magic brush’ we started making a class story map for the story and talked about what features we could change to make it our own.

In Maths we added 2 digit numbers and looked at how to check our answer using inverse operations. In topic they talked about and wrote about the video we watched about Ysyatlafera carnival in June 1930. They talked and write about their favourite part of the video and explained why. They wrote some questions about what they would like to find out about celebrations and carnivals!

Friday 31st January

We have had a lovely week in year 2 and 3.  In language the children have written instructions and evaluated them.  In  Maths we have been looking at place value and partitioning 3 digit numbers.  The children also found  missing numbers.  On Monday the children found out this terms topic and have been busy discussing and talking about what they would like to find out, what they can do, make and what they care about linked to the topic.  They wrote some ideas down on their four purposes planning sheet and these ideas will be incorporated into the terms planning.

Friday 17th January

In maths this week we have continued to look at money. The children were able to add the price of items together and give change. They also looked at money in word problems.

In language we looked at different instructional text and highlighted the different features and made a list of bossy verbs. We wrote a set of instructions as a class and the children made sure that they had included all of the features that were needed.

This week the children fed back and presented in groups to the rest of the clans what they can belong to! They spoke clearly, listened to each other and took turns when speaking.

Friday 10th January

It was lovely to see the children and find out what they had for Christmas and what they had been up to. They were excited to see each other and have worked hard all week! In maths this week we have been looking at money and adding the items to make totals and giving change from 20p and £1.

In language we have been looking at the features of instructions and talking about why instructions are important.  In topic we collaborated together and answered our big Question “what can we belong to?” The children worked as a group to collate as much information to answer the question and will feed back in groups to the rest of their peers next week.  We  had a visit from Kerbkraft who will be coming every Thursday morning  to teach road safety to the year 2 pupils.

Friday 23rd February

We have had a lovely week in year 2/3 and  the children have continued to work hard in the challenge areas.

In maths we played magnetic darts and added up our scores.  In creative we collaborated  and painted our own chocolate factories.

In maths we continued to measure in cm, m and mm. we realised that 10 mm is the same as 1 cm.

We read the Welsh legend ‘Gwion and the witch’ and the children later received a letter from Ceridwen the great witch. She wrote to them  asking if they would to help her make and design a new potion using natural objects found around the  school grounds.

We had the best day on Tuesday when we went to visit the ‘Chocolate Factory’ and made lovely chocolate lolly and truffles!! Have a lovely weekend!

Friday 10th November

This week  year 2 and 3 have had a busy week doing class work, group work and in the challenge areas.    In numeracy we have been learning about fractions of shapes and amounts.   We have completed lots of practical tasks and games on fractions.

In literacy the children followed instructions to make a balancing bird.  They talked about how easy the instructions were to follow and if they could be improved in any way.   They wrote a list of bossy verbs in their books ready to write their instructions next week.

In science the children have identified and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper.  They talked about why certain materials are used instead of other materials.

We learnt about the Wright brothers and found out how important they were in the history of flight.
